Knots & Instructions

01
Improved Clinch Knotโ€” The Go-To
Hook โ†’J-Hook ยท Circle Hook ยท Treble Hook
  1. 01Thread 6 in. of line through the hook eye and double back parallel to the standing line.
  2. 02Make 5โ€“7 wraps of the tag end around the standing line, working away from the hook.
  3. 03Pass the tag end through the small loop just above the eye, then back through the large loop formed.
  4. 04Moisten, pull the standing line and tag end simultaneously to snug tight to the eye. Trim excess.

Bass, trout & panfish. Works on mono & fluorocarbon. The most-used freshwater knot.

02
Palomar Knotโ€” The Braid King
Hook โ†’Circle Hook ยท Octopus Hook ยท EWG Hook
  1. 01Double about 6 in. of line to form a loop. Push the loop through the hook eye front to back.
  2. 02Tie a loose overhand knot with the doubled line, leaving the hook hanging in the loop below.
  3. 03Open the loop wide and pass the entire hook through it, pulling the loop up and over the hook.
  4. 04Moisten, then pull both the tag end and main line together until the knot seats against the eye. Trim.

Braided line & heavy bass fishing. Near 100% line strength โ€” ideal for largemouth & pike in cover.

03
Uni Knotโ€” The All-Rounder
Hook โ†’Worm Hook ยท Wide Gap Hook ยท Jig Head
  1. 01Thread line through the hook eye and run 8 in. of tag end back alongside the main line, forming a loop.
  2. 02Wrap the tag end around both the main line and inside the loop 6 times, working back toward the hook.
  3. 03Pull the tag end to tighten the wraps into a neat, evenly-spaced coil โ€” don't let them overlap.
  4. 04Moisten and slide the knot to the hook eye by pulling the main line steadily. Trim the tag end close.

Soft plastics, jigs & spinners. Also joins line-to-line. One knot for nearly every situation.

04
Non-Slip Loop Knotโ€” The Lure Knot
Hook โ†’Single Hook ยท Live Bait Hook ยท Swivel
  1. 01Tie a loose overhand knot ~10 in. from the tag end. Do NOT tighten โ€” it acts as your guide point.
  2. 02Pass the tag end through the hook eye and back through the overhand knot from the same entry side.
  3. 03Wrap the tag end around the main line 4โ€“6 times, then pass it back through the overhand knot from the opposite side.
  4. 04Moisten, pull the main line to set the loop size โ€” it stays open intentionally for lure action. Trim.

Crankbaits, minnow lures & live bait. The free loop gives natural swimming action โ€” more strikes.

05
Snell Knotโ€” Power Hook Set
Hook โ†’Offset Hook ยท Octopus Hook ยท Circle Hook
  1. 01Pass 8 in. of line through the hook eye from the front (point side). Let the tag run alongside the shank.
  2. 02Form a loop by laying the tag end back over both the shank and the main line above the eye.
  3. 03Wrap the loop around the hook shank 7โ€“9 times toward the bend, keeping wraps tight and even.
  4. 04Hold wraps in place, pull the tag end firmly to cinch all coils against the shank. Moisten and trim.

Catfish, walleye & carp. Keeps hook perfectly aligned for maximum hook-set power on bottom rigs.

06
Blood Knotโ€” The Line Joiner
Hook โ†’Line-to-Line ยท Leader Connection ยท Tippet
  1. 01Overlap the two lines by about 6 in., with the tag ends pointing in opposite directions.
  2. 02Wrap one tag end around the other line 5 times, then bring it back through the center gap between the two lines.
  3. 03Repeat on the other side โ€” wrap the second tag end 5 times in the opposite direction, then pass it through the same center gap from the other side.
  4. 04Moisten both sides, then pull both standing lines simultaneously to draw the coils together. Trim both tag ends close.

Joining two lines of similar diameter โ€” ideal for adding a fluorocarbon leader to mono or connecting tippet sections.

07
Alberto Knotโ€” The Leader Knot
Hook โ†’Braid-to-Fluorocarbon ยท Braid-to-Mono Leader
  1. 01Double over 8 in. of the heavier leader line to form a loop. Insert the braid tag end into the loop.
  2. 02Wrap the braid tag end around the outside of the doubled leader 7 times toward the closed end of the loop.
  3. 03Then wrap back 7 times in the opposite direction toward the open end of the loop.
  4. 04Pass the braid tag end back through the leader loop from the same side it entered. Moisten and pull the braid standing line to cinch. Trim.

Connecting braid mainline to a fluorocarbon or mono leader. Slim profile passes through guides smoothly โ€” essential for inshore and bass fishing.

๐Ÿ’ง Always Moisten First

Saliva or water before tightening prevents friction heat from weakening your line โ€” critical on fluorocarbon.

โœ‚๏ธ Trim Smart

Leave 1โ€“2 mm of tag end. Too short and the knot may slip; too long creates drag and can spook fish.

๐Ÿงช Test Every Knot

Give a firm tug before casting. A knot that slips at home costs nothing โ€” one that slips on the water costs everything.

Pro Tips

KNOT TIPS FROM THE WATER

01

Wet your knot before cinching it down. Dry line creates friction heat that weakens the knot significantly.

02

Test every knot with a firm tug before casting. A knot that slips in your hand will fail on a fish.

03

Learn 3 knots well rather than 10 knots poorly. The Palomar, Uni, and loop knot cover 95% of situations.

04

Re-tie your knot after catching a fish or snagging structure. Knots weaken with every stress event.
